Antique Canton Silk Mantón de Manila, c. 1880-1900

$985.00

A beautifully preserved embroidered panel from a 19th-century Mantón de Manila, worked in fine Chinese export silk and later re-fringed by hand in the early 20th-century. A statement, heirloom piece. Delicate peonies, scrolling vines, and star blossoms are rendered in satin stitch and tiny eyelets across luminous ivory silk, showcasing the exceptional Canton embroidery that made these shawls prized across Spain and Europe. At a later date the original shawl panel was carefully reworked into this wearable wrap, finished with hand-knotted macramé fringe. What remains is the most richly embroidered portion of the original textile, beautifully suited as a dramatic wrap. The silk retains its soft sheen and fluid drape.
